Key takeaways
- It's free and drives Google Maps results
- Choose the right primary category and address setup
- Earn genuine reviews; never buy them
The quick answer
A Google Business Profile is the free listing that shows your business in Google Maps and in the map results at the top of local searches. To show up for searches like "electrician Chermside" or "cafe West End", claim and verify your profile, pick the right primary category, fill in every field honestly, add real photos, and keep earning genuine reviews. For most Brisbane service businesses it's the cheapest, fastest local SEO win there is.
How Google decides who shows up
Google says local results are based mainly on three things: relevance, distance and prominence.
Relevance
How well your profile matches what someone searched. Accurate categories, services and a clear description help Google understand what you do.
Distance
How far your business is from the searcher, or from the area named in the search. You can't change this one, so get the rest right.
Prominence
How well known your business is, judged partly from reviews, links and mentions across the web. Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help.
There's no way to pay for a better spot in the free map results. Ads can appear above them, but that's a separate thing (see SEO vs Google Ads).
Step 1: Claim and verify your profile
Search for your business on Google Maps first. If a listing already exists, perhaps created by Google or a former owner, claim it rather than making a second one. If not, add a new profile at business.google.com. Google will ask you to verify, which can be by phone, email, video or another method depending on your business. Use an email address your business owns, not a staff member's personal account, so you never lose access.
Step 2: Get the address question right
This is where many Brisbane businesses trip up. Google's guidelines for representing your business are strict:
- Shopfront or office customers visit? Show the address, and keep permanent signage with your business name there.
- You go to the customer (trades, mobile services, cleaners)? You're a service-area business. Hide your address and set a service area instead. If you work from home, clear your home address from the profile.
- Virtual offices and mail drops aren't eligible. A coworking desk only counts if it has clear signage, takes customers during business hours and is staffed by your team in those hours.
Google also says your service area shouldn't stretch much further than about two hours' drive from where you're based. In practice, a Northside plumber might list suburbs from North Lakes to Nundah, while a Southside business might cover Mt Gravatt, Sunnybank and Carindale. List the areas you genuinely serve, not all of South East Queensland.
Step 3: Fill in every field properly
- Business name. Use your real-world name exactly as it appears on your signage and invoices. Adding keywords like "Best Plumber Brisbane" breaks Google's rules and can get the profile suspended.
- Primary category. The single most important choice. Pick the most specific one that fits ("Electrician", not "Contractor"), then add a few accurate secondary categories.
- Services and products. List each main service with a short plain description.
- Hours. Keep them accurate, and update special hours for public holidays like the Ekka holiday and Christmas.
- Phone and website. Use a local or mobile number you answer, and link to the most relevant page on your site. A multi-suburb business might link to a location page.
- Description. A few clear sentences on what you do, who for and where. No links, no keyword lists.
Step 4: Add real photos
Upload genuine photos of your shopfront, team at work, vehicles, finished jobs and products. Stock photos don't tell customers anything. A quick monthly habit of adding a few new job photos keeps the profile looking active, and it's useful for people comparing two businesses side by side.
Step 5: Earn reviews the right way
Reviews matter to customers and, according to Google, to prominence. Ask every happy customer, using the review link from your profile, ideally by text straight after a job. Reply to every review, good or bad, politely and briefly.
Don't buy or fake reviews. It's against Google's policies, and the ACCC says it's against the law for a business to create fake or misleading reviews, or arrange for others to. Offering incentives only for positive reviews is a bad idea too.
Step 6: Keep it consistent across the web
Make sure your business name, phone number and address (or service area) match across your website, Facebook, industry directories and listings like Yellow Pages or True Local. Mismatched details confuse customers and make it harder for Google to trust the information. Your website should back up the profile too, with clear service pages and suburb pages. Our local SEO services and web design pages explain how that fits together.
Step 7: Keep it alive
- Post updates and offers now and then (new services, seasonal promotions, storm-season reminders for trades).
- Answer questions customers ask on your profile.
- Check monthly for suggested edits from Google or the public and correct anything wrong.
- Look at the profile's performance data to see calls, website clicks and direction requests.
Common mistakes we see in Brisbane
- Two or more profiles for the same business, often from an old address.
- A home address showing publicly when it should be hidden.
- Keyword-stuffed business names, which risk suspension.
- Wrong primary category, so the business shows up for the wrong searches.
- Hours not updated after a move or for public holidays.
- A profile set up by a former agency or staff member that the owner can't log in to.
When to get help
Setting up a profile is something most owners can do in an afternoon. Where it gets harder is suspended or duplicate listings, competitive categories, and multi-location businesses across the Southside, Northside and inner city. If you'd like a second pair of eyes, send an enquiry using the form. We'll organise an online meeting, or meet in person if you're based in South East Queensland.
Frequently asked questions
Is a Google Business Profile free?
Yes. Creating and managing a Google Business Profile is free. Google Ads are a separate, paid product.
Can I have a Google Business Profile without a shopfront?
Yes. If you travel to customers, you can set up a service-area profile, hide your address and list the areas you serve. Virtual offices aren't eligible.
Can I use a coworking space address in Brisbane?
Only if the office has clear signage, receives customers during business hours and is staffed by your team during those hours, according to Google's guidelines.
How long does it take to show up in Google Maps?
It varies. Verification can take anywhere from minutes to a few weeks depending on the method Google asks for, and rankings then depend on relevance, distance and prominence.
Should I put keywords like 'Brisbane' in my business name?
Only if it's genuinely part of your registered, real-world business name. Adding extra keywords goes against Google's guidelines and can lead to suspension.
